The Benefits of Coffee You Don’t Know About

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages around the world.  It is second only to water in consumption.  That’s a whole lot of java!  You may have heard some health reports about how unhealthy coffee is and that may have caused you some concern about your favorite hot morning drink.  

Well, here’s some good news for all youCoffee coffee drinkers out there!  Coffee can have many health benefits if consumed in moderation.  We all know that it helps us get up in the morning, and it breaks us out of that mid afternoon slump, but check out these great reasons to drink coffee that you don’t know about.

Coffee helps to prevent gallstones.

Recent research from Harvard University studied women who drank coffee.  Their results found that women who drank at least four cups of coffee per day were 25 percent less likely to experience gallstones than those who didn’t drink coffee.  A study that was conducted prior to 2002 found that men were also less likely to have gallstones if they regularly drank coffee.

Coffee helps to prevent and treat depression.

A recent study showed that women who regularly drank coffee were less depressed than those who did not.  Women who consumed two to three cups of Joe a day were 15 percent less likely to be depressed or develop depression symptoms.  Women who drank four cups per day were 20 percent less likely to be depressed.

Coffee can help improve your memory.

In a 2005 study, it was found that regular coffee consumption helped improve both short term and long term memory.  This research showed that coffee can help improve cognitive function and even speed up reaction time.  Women aged 65 and up who regularly drank coffee were found to have stronger memories than those who did not drink coffee.

Coffee may decrease your risk of certain cancers.

Studies show a link between coffee and the prevention of breast, endometrial, prostate and liver cancer.  Drinking four cups of coffee per day means a 20 percent lower risk of breast cancer, according to a study performed in 2011.  Both regular and decaf coffee has been linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer in men.

Coffee can help boost your metabolism.

Coffee has been show to help you lose weight and keep it off.  Caffeine helps to stimulate your metabolism, making it easier for your body to burn calories and process food.  Researchers say it is not just the caffeine in coffee that does this but rather the chlorogenic acid as well.
