A huge number of Americans suffer from fall allergies each year. Just how many? Twenty-six million to be exact. The fall season not only brings about nicer weather and yellow leaves, but it can also bring about painful sinus infections and allergies to pollen and ragweed. Thankfully, we have several natural remedies to try that are much more effective than allergy medicine, and they don’t leave you with any drowsy side effects.
Up the Omega-3s: One German study made the connection that food with higher levels omega-3 fatty-acids were better at control the inflammation allergy sufferers experience. Some foods that are rich in omega-3s are salmon, tuna, walnuts, flaxseeds, and eggs.
Wash Your Eyelids: This may seem like a weird trick to try, but it works. Eyelids and eyelashes tend to collect the pollen and other allergy-causing particles. Therefore, it is a good eye to wash your eyelids, and perhaps your whole face with gentle baby soap or shampoo. This should help keep your eyes from itching and getting red and swollen.
Add a Little Spice: Foods that are spicy, such as foods made with horseradish, jalapenos, and other chilies, can help clear the sinus cavity quickly. Not only will you be able to breathe a little easier, but you will also help clear out any pollen in your sinuses.
Change Your Sheets: If you notice that your allergies get worse when you go to bed or when you first wake up, your bed linens may be to blame. Three easy things you can do to prevent this is to change your pillowcase every other day, change your sheets weekly, and shower before you get into bed.
Eat Plain Yogurt: Plain yogurt has also been found to help promote friendly bacteria and help reduce inflammation. Try it in a smoothie or with granola. You can use honey or maple syrup to sweeten your yogurt, but avoid the high sugar brands.
Clean the Air: Now is the time to replace your air and furnace filters. These filters should be changed every three months ideally. If you feel as if your allergies are really getting to you, you might want to take a peak at how dirty those filters are. Also, it is a good idea to invest in an air purifier for your room. Be sure to clean the filter out often too.
Neti Pots: A popular device that many people swear by is the Neti pot. This small pot allows you to add a special, warm water solution that will rinse out your sinuses. The feeling is a little weird at first, but it can help break up congestion and clean out pollen, all while decreasing inflammation to the sinus tissues.
For these natural fall allergy treatments to start working, it is best to give them a few days. Start adding these healthy foods into your diet now, so that when fall allergies are in full swing, you will be protected.
